| Q: I purchased a light colored wood wall unit. I’d like to spray paint it dark brown, using the Rust-Oleum Satin spray paint. Do I need to sand the wall unit down first or will the spray paint stick regardless? A: Prepare the surface by scrubbing with mineral spirits or TSP on fine nylon abrasive pads. The solvent will remove any surface grease or oil while the pad lightly abrades the surface. Depending on the paint you choose, you may need a primer first, in which case I would suggest Zinsser BIN or Zinsser SealCoat. However, Rust-Oleum has an aerosol paint called Universal that does not require a primer. | | |
| Q: I have a Redwood house that has not been stained in about 10 years or more. I have some old stain, but have no idea on how to prep the wood. A: It really depends on what condition the wood is in. If it is in good condition and the right color, all you need to is clean the surface first. The easiest way to do that is with a pressure washer, but a scrub brush will do nicely also. On the other hand, if you must reverse graying, you’ll want to use something like Wolman DeckBrite for that job. | | |
| Q: How do I clean kitchen cabinets? A: Clean the surface by scrubbing with mineral spirits or TSP on fine nylon abrasive pads. The solvent will remove any surface grease or oil while the pad lightly abrades the surface. | | |
| Q: Do you think the paint remover will harm solid mahogany in any way, and do you have a paint remover recommendation to remove polyurethane? A: Nope, it certainly won’t harm it. Here’s a good brand of paint remover. For polyurethane, I’d use one of the stronger ones, like Power Stripper, the first one on the page. |
