| Q: Does Watco Butcher Block Oil come in satin sheen? A: That’s a wipe on finish. You flood it on, let it soak in a bit, then wipe off the excess. Because such finishes reside more in the wood than atop it, unless you build up an excessive number of coats, you will not develop much sheen at all. For that reason, wipe on finishes don’t generally come in sheens. Even with more than one coat, satin is about the shiniest it will get, and a single coat will be somewhat duller than that. | | |
| Q: Im building several book shelves for our house and would like to spray solid color lacquer. As this is a big project, spray cans will not work. Where can I find quart or gallon of solid color for spraying? A: Any paint store that sells to professionals is likely to carry lacquer in basic colors as well as lacquer pastes, which are concentrated colorants you add to clear lacquer to make custom colors. However, if you really mean you are going to spray lacquer, I trust you know it requires an explosion proof spray booth and appropriate safety gear. Frankly, for book shelves I would simply spray waterbased trim paint. Both Painter’s Touch and American Accents offer waterbased paints that are durable enough for book shelves, and they will be safer, cheaper and possibly even easier to apply. If they are too thick for your spray equipment, you can reduce them with Floetrol, which you will find at any paint or home store. | | |
| Q: Can you recommend an auto polish that I could use by hand to give a polish to a waterbased finish? A: To be honest, any automotive rubbing and polishing compounds will work. If you want to know which one I have here at the moment, it is Turtle Wax Polishing Compound. Just a reminder: you must wait at least a month after the last coat before rubbing waterbased finish to gloss. | | |
| Q: Where is Watco Butcher Block Oil sold? A: Mostly through woodworking specialty stores, I suspect. Do a web search and you will find plenty of companies who sell Watco Butcher Block Oil, as well as other brands of food safe finishes, such as Behlen Salad Bowl finish, which will also work. The embedded links will take you to two different vendors, both of whom sell online. |
