| Q: I opened a can of waterbased polyurethane and it is a milky white color. Is there something wrong with it? A: I doubt it. Waterbased finish is an emulsion of clear resin in a clear vehicle. Such emulsions are typically milky white in their wet state, but dry clear. Actually, skim milk is a good example; it is also a milky white emulsion that dries clear. | | |
| Q: Can you spray Varathane combination stain and poly? A: Yep. In fact, they sell One-Step Stain and Poly in an aerosol can. | | |
| Q: I made some end tables and applied oil based wood conditioner to all. As colors only seemed to come in waterbased stain, the store employee told us we could use it over that conditioner as it has dried a couple days. Is that okay? A: Let’s change the question. Are you likely to get away with it? Yes, you are, though you will not get quite the same results you would have without. Still, there is no egregious problem. You are simply staining with acrylics atop partially sealed wood. You’d get better adhesion and more color penetration on raw wood, but this is not the end of the world. On another note, whatever do you mean by saying “colors only seemed to come in waterbased stain?” From what I have seen, there are more colors of oil based stains than waterbased. | | |
| Q: Can I use polyurethane on top of waterbased stain put over dried conditioner? A: Yes. |
